Cellulose sponges
Made from plant-based materials, cellulose sponges are a quieter, less popular option. They are softer than foam sponges and do not usually have an abrasive layer, which may be why many people overlook them. However, studies show that cellulose sponges tend to accumulate fewer bacteria after a week of use. They are compostable and often sold in paper packaging, making them a good fit for a low-waste routine.
Loofah sponges
Loofah is a plant related to zucchini. When fully grown and dried, its fibrous interior can be used for cleaning. With minimal processing, loofah becomes a durable and natural sponge.
Loofah sponges lather well, rinse easily, and dry quickly. They are firm enough to remove food residue while staying gentle on dishes. After use, they can be composted, as they are made entirely from plant fibre. For tougher cleaning jobs, loofah can be paired with a metal scrubber or a wooden-handled brush.
Hand-knitted natural fibre scrubbers
Eco-shops often offer reusable dish scrubbers made from natural fibres such as jute or hemp. They are available in different shapes and textures and are designed to last. Natural fibres are durable, can be washed or boiled, and tend to resist unpleasant odours. While they dry more slowly than loofah, they absorb water well and can be composted at the end of their life.
The simplest option
Sometimes the most sustainable choice is to reuse what you already have. A homemade dish cloth made from old fabric gives materials a second life and reduces the need to buy new products.
Small changes in everyday habits can make routine tasks a little lighter on the planet.
